Amalago Bay Resort/St. Croix
Even though we live on Saint Thomas, there are really 3 Virgin Islands that we like to visit and feel like they are part of our "big island" home. We mostly boat over to Saint John each week but Saint Croix is also a fabulous place to visit (via Sea Plane for us) for the day or even staying over at the Buccaneer Hotel.
Today in the local Daily News, the article about the Amalago Bay Resort had an article because it got the approval from the Coastal Commission to go ahead with plans on the $640 million marina and casino resort being developed by William and Punch (The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation - which owns and operates Foxwoods Casino and Resort in Connecticut - has a majority interest in the development as well). They got the green light to moving ahead and their plans are to break ground early next year on Saint Croix. It has plans for condominiums, a boutique hotel, spa, restaurants, retail shops, a casino, timeshare units, a championship golf course and a 64-slip marina for the property. Whew, that is going to be BIG! The last hurdles before they can break ground include amending the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit application to reflect Monday's CZM decision the daily news said. I have a feeling there will be more of this back and forth for a while before they actually break ground. Just how it goes in the Islands......
There seems to be mixed feeling on St. Croix about this new development. While St. Croix does want and need new tourism, this resort is slated to use the exsisting Water and Power grid vs. it's own generated power. With the demands put on the infrastructure now, this is going to be a BIG issue. With a development this size they should be considering their own power not the WAPA grid (as someone who has power issues with WAPA in my little house let alone a big resort). The development is also in a turtle nesting beach area and cutting channels in through it will cause shore erosion that will require beach renourishment. Digging an inland marina will also bring about some serious saltwater intrusion into the local freshwater aquifers. So many issues to consider for the Coastal commission and ACOE. This may take a while. In about 30 days there should be an annoucement on what major hotel chain is going to be associated with this project as well. Hmmm, wonder who is will be.
Congratulations to our sister island, St. Croix.
